A Comprehensive Study of Isaiah 6:8 — “Here Am I, Send Me”

A Comprehensive Study of Isaiah 6:8 — “Here Am I, Send Me”

Isaiah 6:8 (NKJV): “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’”

I. Introduction

Isaiah 6:8 is one of the most powerful verses describing the call of God upon a believer’s life. It reveals God’s heart to send His people into the world and demonstrates what a proper response to His call looks like. Isaiah’s willingness to serve flows from a life-changing encounter with the holiness, grace, and glory of God. In this study, we explore the context of Isaiah’s call, its meaning, and the ways we can apply this truth to our daily lives.

II. The Context of Isaiah’s Call

A. A Vision of God’s Holiness (Isaiah 6:1–4)

Isaiah sees the Lord seated on a throne, high and lifted up, with seraphim declaring “Holy, holy, holy.” This vision magnifies God’s purity, sovereignty, and unmatched glory. True ministry always begins with seeing God for who He is. Isaiah was overwhelmed because God’s holiness exposes our human inadequacy and draws us into deeper reverence.

B. A Revelation of Isaiah’s Sinfulness (Isaiah 6:5)

Standing before a holy God, Isaiah cries, “Woe is me! I am undone… for I am a man of unclean lips.” This confession shows that encountering God’s holiness produces humility, self-awareness, and repentance. No one can serve God effectively while hiding sin. His glory exposes our need for grace.

C. A Cleansing From God (Isaiah 6:6–7)

A seraph touches Isaiah’s lips with a burning coal, declaring that his sin is taken away. God cleanses the very area of Isaiah’s weakness, preparing him for His service. God does not call the perfect; He perfects the called. His cleansing qualifies us to do His will.

III. The Call of God (Isaiah 6:8)

A. God Invites Rather Than Forces

God does not demand Isaiah to go. Instead, He asks, “Whom shall I send?” This shows God values willing servants, not reluctant ones. God seeks surrendered hearts, not coerced obedience.

B. Isaiah Volunteers Before Knowing the Assignment

Isaiah says, “Here am I; send me” without knowing where he will go, what he will say, or how people will respond. This demonstrates complete surrender and trust. He responds to the Caller before knowing the call.

C. God Often Calls Us to Difficult Tasks (Isaiah 6:9–10)

The rest of the chapter reveals Isaiah’s assignment would be challenging and that people would resist his message. Yet God measures success by obedience, not by visible results. Faithfulness is what God desires.

IV. Applying Isaiah 6:8 to Our Lives

A. Seek a Fresh Vision of God

Our willingness to serve God grows from seeing Him clearly. We must pursue Scripture, prayer, worship, and reverence. A small view of God results in small obedience; a big view of God leads to big surrender.

B. Allow God to Cleanse and Transform Us

Before God sends us, He purifies us. We must confess sin, lay down pride, and allow God to refine our motives. God uses cleansed vessels to accomplish His work.

C. Cultivate a Willing Heart

Isaiah’s response was immediate and unconditional. We should adopt the same posture daily: “Lord, use me today however You choose.” Availability is often more important than ability.

D. Understand That God’s Call May Be Difficult

God’s assignments are often challenging. Like Isaiah, we may face resistance or discouragement. But faithfulness, not comfort, is the mark of a true servant of God.

E. Live as God’s Representative

God still asks, “Who will go for Us?” He calls us to be ambassadors of Christ, sharing His love, truth, and hope with a hurting world. Every believer has a place in God’s mission.

V. Questions for Reflection

1. What does my current view of God reveal about my heart?

2. Are there areas of my life that need God’s cleansing?

3. Am I willing to say, “Here am I, send me,” without conditions?

4. Where is God calling me to serve right now?

5. What excuses do I need to surrender to God?

VI. A Prayer Based on Isaiah 6:8

“Father, reveal Your holiness to me. Cleanse my heart, remove anything that dishonors You, and prepare me for Your service. Give me courage, faithfulness, and willingness to say, ‘Here am I—send me.’ Use my life for Your glory. Amen.”
