Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread Learning Daily Dependence Through the Manna of God Introduction One of the simplest petitions Jesus taught His disciples to pray is also one of the richest in spiritual meaning: 'Give us this day our daily bread.' Those words are far more than a request for food. They are a confession that every good gift comes from God and that His people are called to live in continual dependence upon Him. The foundation for that prayer was laid centuries earlier when Israel wandered through the wilderness and God fed them with manna from heaven. Bread from Heaven After Israel left Egypt they quickly discovered that freedom from slavery did not remove their need for God's provision. In the wilderness there were no fields to harvest and no cities to supply them. God responded by raining bread from heaven each morning.
