A Generous Heart in a Self-Protective World

Introduction

Beloved, God’s Word does not just command actions—He shapes hearts. In Deuteronomy 15, God establishes a system of grace among His people. Every seventh year, debts were to be released. Imagine the boldness of that—no interest, no long-term debt traps, no grinding poverty cycling through generations. God built mercy into the economy of His people.

But God knows the human heart. He knows our tendency to protect ourselves, to calculate rather than trust, to hesitate when generosity costs us something. So He warns His people:

“Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart…” (Deut. 15:9)

This is not about economics alone—it’s about faith, obedience, and love. God calls His people to reflect His generous nature and trust His provision.

Today, we face the same temptation Israel did: “What will happen to me if I give?” But God invites us to ask instead: “What might God do through me if I give?”

I. The Temptation to Withhold

“Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart…”

God exposes the battle before it ever reaches our wallet—it begins in the heart and in the thoughts. The phrase “unworthy thought” means wicked or evil plan. It’s a spirit of selfish calculation—putting self above God and above others.

Israel might say, “If I lend to this brother close to the release year, I may never get it back.” Today the heart whispers:

- “I might need this later.”

- “They might waste it.”

- “That’s not my responsibility.”

Proverbs 4:23 says: “Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Before stinginess becomes behavior, it is first a belief. Jesus told us where your treasure is, your heart will be also (Matt. 6:21).

II. The Test of Faith

“And you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release, is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly…”

The struggle wasn’t inability—it was fear of loss. Generosity is not measured by the gift, but by the faith behind the gift.

Philippians 4:19 reminds us: “My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

A clenched fist can hold tightly, but it cannot receive. Only open hands can receive God’s blessings.

III. God’s Care for the Needy

“And he cry to the LORD against you…”

Psalm 34:6 declares: “This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him.”

God consistently defends the poor. To mistreat the poor is to insult their Maker (Prov. 14:31). Jesus said, “Whatever you did for the least of these, you did unto Me.” (Matt. 25:40)

IV. Refusal to Give Is Sin

“And you be guilty of sin.”

We sin when we know good and do not do it (James 4:17).

God gave you your resources not only for your use but for His glory and others’ benefit. Generosity is discipleship. Greed is rebellion.

 Conclusion

Jesus didn’t give conditionally. He didn’t wait to see who would be grateful. He didn’t ask who deserved it. He poured Himself out freely.

We are never more like Christ than when we give.

 Call to Action

Pray: “Lord, make my heart generous.”

Look for someone to bless.

Trust God to provide as you obey Him.
