What Did Jesus Mean?

John 12:23–26 (ESV)

“And Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there will My servant be also. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.’”

A Turning Point in Christ’s Mission

John 12 marks a pivotal moment. Up until now, Jesus repeatedly said, “My hour has not yet come.” But in this passage, as Gentiles seek Him (John 12:20–22), Christ declares, “The hour has come.”

This is the moment His mission moves from anticipation to fulfillment. The cross is no longer distant—it stands directly before Him.

The Grain of Wheat: A Divine Principle of Life

Jesus illustrates His mission through a simple seed: a grain must fall and die to produce life. Life comes through death. This mirrors Christ’s work and teaches us about discipleship—dying to self so Christ may live through us.

Loving Life vs. Losing It

Jesus warns that whoever clings to their life will lose it. This is not hatred of existence, but a rejection of self-centered living. The way to life is surrender.

Following Jesus: The Path of the Cross

To follow Christ means to walk the road He walked—humility, obedience, sacrifice, and ultimately glory. Christ does not ask us to go where He has not gone; He goes before us and with us.

Heaven’s Reward: The Father’s Honor

The world may not honor faithful obedience, but the Father will. Heaven applauds what earth overlooks.

Conclusion

May we be like the grain of wheat—willing to fall, die to self, and rise to bear fruit for the glory of Christ.
