My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less
The Christian life is anchored in a hope that does not shift with the world’s instability. The hymn writer Edward Mote captured this truth with the timeless line, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” This is not poetic exaggeration—it is the biblical reality of every believer. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that true hope is not grounded in circumstances, achievements, emotions, or human assurances, but in Christ alone. This article explores what it means to build our hope entirely upon Jesus and why nothing else can sustain the soul.
1 . The Necessity of a Sure Foundation
Every person builds their life on something. Jesus taught
this vividly in Matthew 7:24–27, contrasting the wise man who built his house
on the rock with the foolish man who built his on the sand. The storms came to
both houses, but only one stood.
Christ alone is the Rock that cannot be shaken. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:11)
2. Hope Built on His Righteousness, Not Ours
The hymn declares that our hope is built on Christ’s
righteousness, not our own. Human righteousness is described as “filthy rags”
(Isaiah 64:6). But Christ provides what we cannot.
3. Hope Built on His Blood
At the center of Christian hope is the blood of Jesus
Christ. His blood reconciles us, cleanses us, and purchases our redemption.
4. Hope That Anchors the Soul
Hebrews 6:19 declares, “We have this hope as an anchor for
the soul, firm and secure.”
5. All Other Ground Is Sinking Sand
Everything outside of Christ eventually fails. But Jesus
never fails.
6. Hope That Looks Toward Glory
The believer’s hope is not only for this life but in the
certainty of Christ’s return.
Conclusion
On Christ the solid rock we stand. All other ground is
sinking sand.
