Identifying With Christ: Embracing the New Identity That Changes Everything

Identifying With Christ: Embracing the New Identity That Changes Everything

One of the highest privileges of salvation—and one of the most neglected truths in the church today—is the believer’s identity in Christ. Scripture emphasizes over and over that the Christian life is not primarily about striving to be better; it is about living from a new identity that has been graciously given in Jesus.

To “identify with Christ” means more than admiring Him, agreeing with His teachings, or believing He died and rose again. It means understanding that your life has been spiritually joined to His. What He accomplished becomes the foundation of who you are. His life becomes your life. His mission becomes your mission. His story becomes your story.

 1. Identification Begins With Union in Christ’s Death

Paul’s words in Romans 6 strike at the heart of Christian identity: “We have been united with Him in a death like His.” (Romans 6:5)

The phrase united with Him means to be fused together, joined as one. When Christ died, God counted your old self as crucified with Him.

2. Identifying With Christ Means Sharing in His Resurrection Life

“We were buried… in order that, just as Christ was raised… we too might walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4)

Resurrection life is not just a future event—it is a present reality.

3. Identifying With Christ Changes the Lens Through Which You See Yourself

Your identity is based on what God says about you.

4. Identifying With Christ Means Embracing His Mission

“As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” (John 20:21)

5. Identifying With Christ Shapes How You Endure Trials

“Rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings.” (1 Peter 4:13)

6. Identifying With Christ Calls You to Imitate Christ

Identity becomes lifestyle (1 John 2:6).

7. Identifying With Christ Gives Unshakable Security

“Because I live, you also will live.” (John 14:19)
